Today’s Question is:
Does fate exist? If so, do we have free will?
Feel free to stop here and answer in the comments before reading my answer below the break.

I believe life is a mixture of fate and free will.
We have some specific lessons we are meant to learn, some specific people we are meant to meet, some specific things we are meant to do. But because of free will, we may repeat certain patterns until we learn what we were meant to learn, we may take the long way around to meeting the people we were meant to meet, and we may have our own timeline to doing what we are meant to do.
At the same time we are where we are meant to be at any given moment, because given our choices we couldn’t be anywhere but where we are. But I still feel life will keep throwing some things at us repeatedly until we hit certain touchpoints.
In a highly simplified way it’s like a video game with multiple paths. Those paths will all intersect periodically throughout the game and for a short while you will play the same timeline no matter which set of paths you chose. The dialogue may change slightly and some non-essential npc’s may have changed, but the general story line is the same for that section no matter which other choices you made.
So I believe that fate and free choice co-exist. I believe certain things in my life were predetermined, even though their timing and location were not.
I still believe we have control over our own destiny though. We ultimately decide which paths to go down, which choices to make in every given situation.
What about you? What do you believe?
Does fate exist? If so, do we have free will?
I tend to lean pretty heavily towards free will.

I think free will is the ultimate decision maker.
Have you ever held a different belief?

No, the idea of fate just never resonated with me.

Dude… I’m freaking out a little bit because that is EXACTLY how I see it. EXACTLY and not a lot of people think that, so it totally surprised me. Weird, but maybe kismet!

I think it’s rare to find people who think like us! I’m glad we both do. I’ve really enjoyed following your blog and look forward to getting to “know you” more.

So I know this was posted about seven months ago, but I wrote a similar post on blogger before and a wordpress account I deleted, and I was just wondering if you would read my view on it? The link to the post on blogger is: https://randomforgottenthoughts.blogspot.com/2018/01/fate-or-free-will.html
and if it would be easier I can set up a quick blog on here and re-post it.

Interesting view. I don’t exactly believe in a higher power but I do believe in fate. I’m not sure who I think is writing the fate part of my life though, I’ve never actually thought about it like that.
Forgive me for thinking out loud for a few paragraphs.
I believe that all religions are equally valid and that most say the same general thing and I don’t necessarily negate the existence of a higher power. I’ve been known to say “Whatever runs this cruel world” because I do believe there is something controlling what happens when, but I don’t believe we’re meant to know what it is. I’m not even sure that it even has any direct control in our lives now. Whatever it is (science, deity, etc) I almost feel like it wrote a book a long time ago (or a video game, to use my example) and now we’re just playing through it.
So I guess I do believe that something bigger than us existed at one time, and maybe still exists.
Thanks for sharing your view, it gives me a lot to think about.
